Conservation
Out of concern for works of art we include here a few basic guidelines on how to handle the works in your possession.
Prints, drawings - works on paper:
- Do not display works in strong direct sunlight.
- If at all possible do not hang works directly above radiators.
- Do not spray directly onto Plexiglas/glass (only use a cloth) and do not use ethyl alcohol on Plexiglas as it may tarnish the surface.
- Paper is sensitive to high humidity so if you are decorating, move all prints and drawings to a safe place.
- When changing frames please remember to use acid-free paper and passepartouts; prints should not touch wooden surfaces as yellow stains may appear.
Bronze
- Please do not clean bronze with cleaning fluids freely available on the market - there are specialist agents for this purpose, but first try them out on small areas of the piece which are not visible.
- Dust bronzes delicately with a soft cloth.
- Bronze may tarnish - depending on the colour of the tarnish it will have to be restored in the appropriate way. Do not use any 'homemade' cleaning agents before consulting a restorer.
Oil on canvas
- Do not clean the surface of the canvas with any liquids, and do not scrub.
- Any cavities and cracks should be filled by a restorer.
- Please make sure that picture frame edges do not damage the canvas in any way. So-called 'sunken' frames can be used.
